Over the past three decades, the editor-in-chief of Dar Alf Leila
wa Leila, Melhem Karem, has actively campaigned for media freedom
and passage of new laws. As a result, preventive arrests and
administrative suspension of journalists were stopped; the right of
journalists not to reveal their sources without being accused of
withholding information was ensured, and several arrested journalists were
released. Dar Alf Leila wa Leila uses the most up-to-date electronic printing equipment in both PC and Mac platforms, enabling its publications to achieve high quality in terms of artwork and layout. This is equally true of Al-Hawadeth, which is printed in ultra-modern premises in London and Beirut. The publishing house's staff, in offices worldwide, is composed of 212 contributors, including journalists, technicians, art directors, correspondents, reporters, and associates. Melhem Karam, editor-in-chief of Dar Alf Leila wa Leila, was elected the president of the Lebanese Journalists' Association (LJA) in 1960 and has been unanimously re-elected since then.
He was also elected President of the Arab Journalists' Association, of
which he is Vice-President today, as well as Vice-President of the
International Journalists' Association. Karam is a resolute defender of
media freedom and works with his colleagues to obtain the passing of laws
ensuring full freedom for journalists. He has cooperated with
international organizations, such as Amnesty International and
journalists' associations, to ensure press freedom.
